　Some thoughts on building a successful marriage

　From my perspective, once you enter into the realm of marriage, building and maintaining a successful marriage is actually a big part of personal and financial success. A solid marriage not only results in people sharing resources together, but a marriage also provides a lot of emotional support, cheerleading, and encouragement to succeed.

　What follows are twelve little things I do quite regularly in my marriage. Please, use as many of these as seem reasonable.

　I tell my wife I love her every single day. I usually do it in the morning before she lees the bedroom, and on weekdays I'll also tell her when I see her in the evening for the first time. I usually couple(加倍，成双) it with a kiss. It's so simple, but it's a constant reminder of the fact that I do love her, no matter what.

　I ask about her day, listen, and ask follow up questions. I do this not only so I can keep tabs on her professional life, but also to give her a great chance to vent about her situation. Everyone needs to talk about themselves sometimes to someone who is interested - I try to provide that for her as often as I can.

　I try to surprise her on a regular basis. I'll spend an hour preparing a really excellent supper when she doesn't expect it. I'll spontaneously give the kids a bath when she's comfortable on the couch under a blanket, even if it's her turn. Doing these little unexpected things not only shows her I care, but also often compels her to do similar things for me.

　I hold her hand. I do this all the time, whenever it crosses my mind and seems ropriate. I'll just hold her hand gently while we're talking or we're riding in the car or we're waiting for an ointment or we're sitting on the couch in the evenings.

　I talk about EVERYTHING with her and let her determine what's interesting. If something is concerning me, I don't hide it from her. I tell her about it. Most of the time she's interested and we'll discuss it - sometimes she's not and I let it drop . Either way, though, she gets the message that I'm making an effort to share and be open.

　I work on building a positive relationship with her family. Whenever I visit or see anyone in her family, I make a special effort to try to establish or build upon a strong relationship with them. This accomplishes several things: it makes her more at ease in a family situation, it helps me to build stronger ties with people that are important to her, and it helps me to understand the influences that were around her as she grew up.

　I send her messages during the day. About once a week, during a time where my wife is really present in my thoughts, I send her a little simple note by email. All it says is something along the lines of "I was thinking about you just now. I can't wait until I see you this evening." It's just a very simple way of letting her know she's on my mind and in my heart.

　I put careful thought into gifts I give her. Sure, it's easy to just run out and get a generic gift to cover yourself during an anniversary or a birthday. However, a gift with some real thought behind it means substantially more than an obviously off-the-cuff gift.

　I encourage her to follow her passions and interests, even if they don't inspire or interest me. If my wife chooses to spend significant time on a project, it's obviously something that's important to her. That doesn't imply at all that it has to be important to me. If she's involved in her own project, I give her positive encouragement and then work on my own interests instead of saying things like "that seems like a waste of time."

　If she needs me, I willingly contribute to(有助于，贡献) those passions. If something genuinely excites her and she wants me to experience it, I willingly involve myself in whatever it may be: a particular type of art, a craft project, a yard project, whatever. 　I attended a school prize-giving ceremony not so long ago and the guest speaker was Andrew Becroft, who had a severe stutter as a child. Instead of allowing this to limit him, he chose to to work hard to overcome it. He is now the Principal Youth Court Judge for New Zealand. Not only did he become successful, but he did so in a profession where he had to speak in front of others regularly ? where his weakness is front and center for all to see. If he hadn?t worked on his speaking ability, it would he been very limiting to his life and career prospects.

　You can find similar people on New Zealand News channels, and I suspect the same in other countries. There are a number of presenters and reporters who he a noticeably unusual manner of speaking. Perhaps they he a lisp, or they he a peculiar accent or pitch of voice. These people he succeeded in spite of what would be ear to be a weakness in their profession.

　Lots of people face far more significant limitations than you do. They may be missing limbs or are born into extreme poverty. But no matter what the limitation, you will always find people who he overcome it.

　Wilma Rudolph was the 20th of 22 children. As a child she suffered measles, mumps, scarlet fever, chicken pox, double pneumonia and eventually polio, leing her left leg and foot weak and deformed. Doctors said she would never walk again. She went on to win 3 gold medals in track during the 1960 Olympic games.

　Mark Inglis lost both of his legs below the knees in a mountaineering accident, but has since climbed Mt Everest.

　These above are cases involving individuals with significant limitations, and it can be easy to write them off as exceptions to the rule, but that?s not the case. They were just people with problems. If one of these people had told you what they hoped to achieve you would he nodded kindly while quietly thinking to yourself that they had no chance. And yet the results speak for themselves.

　Most of us will never he to face the kinds of challenges these people faced. Yet most of us will never achieve to the degree that these people he either.

2.春之怀古

春天必然曾经是这样的：从绿意内敛的山头，一把雪再也掌不住了，噗嗤的一声，将冷脸笑成花面，一首澌澌然的歌便从云端唱到山麓，从山麓唱到低低的荒村，唱入篱落，唱入一只小鸭的黄蹼，唱入软溶溶的春泥--软如一床新翻的棉被的春泥。

那样娇，那样敏感，却又那样浑炖无涯。一声雷，可以无端地惹哭满天的云，一阵杜鹃啼，可以斗急了一城杜鹃花，一阵风起，每一棵柳都吟出一则则白茫茫、虚飘飘说也说不清、听也听不请的飞絮，每一丝飞絮都是一件柳的分号。反正，春天就是这样不讲理、不逻辑，而仍可以好得让人心平气和。

春天必然曾经是这样的：满塘叶黯花残的枯梗抵死苦守一截老根，北地里千宅万户的屋梁受尽风欺雪压犹自温柔地抱着一团小小的空虚的燕巢，然后，忽然有一天，桃花把所有的山村水廓都攻陷了。柳树把皇室的御沟和民间的江头都控制住了--春天有如旌旗鲜明的王师，团长期虔诚的企盼祝祷而美丽起来。

而关于春天的名字，必然曾经有这样的一段故事：在《诗经》之前，在《尚书》之前，在仓颉造字之前，一集小羊在啮草时猛然感到的多汗，一个孩子在放风筝时猛然感觉到的飞腾，一双患风痛的腿在猛然间感到的舒活，千千万万双素手在溪畔在塘畔在江畔浣沙的手所猛然感到的水的血脉……当他们惊讶地奔走互告的时候，他们决定将嘴噘成吹口哨的形状，用一种愉快的耳语的声量来为这季节命名--"春"。

鸟又可以开始丈量天空了。有的负责丈量天的蓝度，有的负责丈量天的透明度，有的负责用那双翼丈量天的高度和深度。而所有的鸟全不是好的数学家，他们吱吱喳喳地算了又算，核了又核，终于还是不敢宣布统计数字。

至于所有的花，已交给蝴蝶去点数。所有的蕊，交给蜜蜂去编册。所有的树，交给风去纵宠。而风，交给檐前的老风铃去一一记忆、一一垂询。

春天必然曾经是这样，或者，在什么地方，它仍然是这样的吧？穿越烟箩与烟箩的黑森林，我想走访那踯躅在湮远年代中的春天。

3.做一个努力的人:有一次，在我参加的一个晚会上，主持人问一个小男孩：你长大以后要做什么样的人？孩子看看我们这些企业家，然后说：做企业家。在场的人忽地笑着鼓起了掌。我也拍了拍手，但听着并不舒服。我想，这孩子对于企业究竟知道多少呢？他是不是因为当着我们的面才说要当企业家的呢？他是不是受了大人的影响，以为企业家风光，都是有钱的人，才要当企业家的呢？

这一切当然都是一个谜。但不管怎样，作为一个人的人生志向，我以为当什么并不重要；不管是谁，最重要的是从小要立志做一个努力的人。

我小的时候也曾有人问过同样的问题，我的回答不外乎当教师、解放军和科学家之类。时光一晃流走了二十多年，当年的孩子，如今已是四十出头的大人。但仔细想一想，当年我在大人们跟前表白过的志向，实际一个也没有实现。我身边的其他人差不多也是如此。有的想当教师，后来却成了个体户；想当解放军的，有人竟做了囚犯。我上大学时有两个同窗好友，他们现在都是我国电子行业里才华出众的人，一个成长为“康佳”集团的老总，一个领导着TCL集团。我们三个不期而然地成为中国彩电骨干企业的经营者，可是当年大学毕业时，无论有多大的想像力，我们也不敢想十几年后会成现在的样子。一切都是我们在奋斗中见机行事，一步一步努力得来的。与其说我们是有理想的人，不如说我们是一直在努力的人。

并非我们不重视理想，而是因为树雄心壮志易，为理想努力难，人生自古就如此。有谁会想到，十多年前的今天，我曾是一个在街头彷徨，为生存犯愁的人？当时的我，一无所有，前途渺茫，真不知路在何处。然而，我却没有灰心失望，回想起来，支撑着我走过这段坎坷岁月的正是我的意志品格。当许多人以为我已不行、该不行了的时候，我仍做着从地上爬起来的努力，我坚信人生就像马拉多纳踢球，往往是在快要倒下去的时候“进球”获得生机的。事实也正是如此，就在“山重水复疑无路”的时候，香港一家企业倒闭给了我东山再起的机会，使我能够与掌握世界最新技术的英国科技人员合作，开发技术先进的彩色电视机，从此一举走出困境。

有人说，“努力”与“拥有”是人生一左一右的两道风景。但我以为，人生最美最不能逊色的风景应该是努力。努力是人生的一种精神状态，是对生命的一种赤子之情。努力是拥有之母，拥有是努力之子。一心努力可谓条条大路通罗马，只想获取可谓道路逼仄，天地窄小。所以，与其规定自己一定要成为一个什么样的人物，获得什么东西，不如磨练自己做一个努力的人。志向再高，没有努力，志向终难坚守；没有远大目标，因为努力，终会找到奋斗的方向。做一个努力的人，可以说是人生最切实际的目标，是人生最大的境界。

许多人因为给自己定的目标太高太功利，因为难以成功而变得灰头土脸，最终灰心失望。究其原因，往往就是因为太关注拥有，而忽略做一个努力的人。对于今天的孩子们，如果只关注他们将来该做个什么样的人物，不把意志品质作为一个做人的目标提出来，最终我们只能培养出狭隘、自私、脆弱和境界不高的人。遗憾的是，我们在这方面做得并不尽如人意。

4.人生絮语:当不幸降临在他人头上时，他们往往都能像智者一样劝慰别人；而当同样的不幸降临自己身上时，人往往很难同样地开导自己。

人最大的不智不是不知道，而是知道了却迟迟不愿去做，所以平庸却又自怜的人很多。

有些缺陷放在别人身上看起来微不足道，不值得一提；但是，这些缺陷若放在自己身上，则很难轻松看待，甚至一生都不能释怀。

自己说过、做过伤害别人心灵的事，有可能转眼间就忘得一干二净；而别人说过或做过的伤害自己的事往往一辈子都能记得清清楚楚，且无法原谅。

他人身上的缺点就像白纸上的黑点，一眼就能看出来；而自己身上的缺点却很难发现。

看别人生活时，我们总喜欢是放大他们的幸福，忽略他们生活中的不幸，所以别人的生活怎么看都觉的幸福。而在看待自己生活时，人们总喜欢缩小自己的幸福，扩大自己的烦恼，所以我们对自己的生活总有太多的不满。

当别人在公众场所不小心出丑时，我们往往一笑了之；而当同样的情境在自己身上出现时，我们往往好长时间不能从尴尬中走出来。

父母喜欢用自己的生活阅历教训子女，教师喜欢用自己的求学阅历教育学生，遗憾的是他们的说教往往很少有人听。直到有一天，历史的一幕重演。

看到别人取得成功时，我们会说，他们的运气好；当他们遭遇失败时，我们会说，他们不努力。自己取得成功时，我们会说这是自己努力的结果；若遭遇失败，我们会自我解嘲说都是环境的错。

一个穷人看见富人时想，他们什么都有，真让人羡慕。一个富人看见一个穷人时想，他一无所有，却又那么快乐。其实，我们就是那个总是对自己生活不满意的穷人或富人。

看别人谈恋爱挑肥拣瘦，我们暗说，不知自己长啥样，还在那儿挑挑拣拣。轮到自己谈恋爱时，总觉得没人能配得上自己。

有时自己犯的错误心里明明白白，也想做出些改变，可是若有人好心地指出我们的错误，我们往往会恼羞成怒，拒绝改变。

与人发生冲突时，错的总是对方，受委屈的才是自己。

5.父亲是一本书:闲来无事，翻出一本散文集。随手打开一页，正是一篇记念父亲的文章。当看到其中一句“父亲是一本书，做子女的也许要用一生的时间才能读懂”时，一阵锥心刺骨般的隐痛顿时刺上心头。屈指算来，父亲离开我已有六年了。这六年里，我无时无刻地不在思念着他。我甚至企求上苍能够给我一个机会，让我重新做一回父亲的女儿，那样我必定将自己所有的孝心都给予他，让他成为世界上最幸福的父亲。然而上苍永远不会给我这个机会，我也只能在愧疚中缅怀父亲了。

父亲只是个普通工人，没有什么文化，但他出生的家庭曾经是很显赫的。他出生在江苏一个大户人家，属于书香门弟，祖上遗留了不少田地和房产，父亲儿时过着少爷般的生活。后来日本人来了，家产全部被抢光，家道中落、一贫如洗，全家被迫逃难到上海。为了一家人的生计，父亲放弃了学业，不到14岁就给人当学徒、做小贩……整日在外奔波劳累。解放后，父亲为了获得一份高收入，瞒着家人报名到外地油田会战支援石油建设，从此一别上海40余年。

父亲的家世我也是成人后才得知，但在我很小时候，我就知道他的成份是地主。在那个唯成分论的年代里，我好像天生就低人一等。别的孩子肆意欺负我，我不敢做丝毫抵抗，我怕他们骂我是“小地主”；小学每学期开学都要填成份，那是我最伤心欲绝的时刻。每次在我胆颤心惊地填上“地主”时，我都有生不如死的感觉。为此我曾经在心里恨过父亲很长时间，我恨他让我小小年纪就要承受那么多的屈辱和难堪！

记得有一次父亲回上海探亲，给我带回一件祖母亲手缝制的缎子夹袄，夹袄上还有祖母用金线精心绣制的花边。当我穿着这件新衣服上学时，同伴们嫉妒得眼珠子都要瞪红了。他们一边朝我吐口水，一边骂我是“小地主”。我一路哭着跑回家，将那件衣服地扔在地上，再用力地踩上几脚。父亲让我捡起来，我倔强地就是不捡，父亲气得扬起手要打我。我一边哭，一边叫嚷着：“谁让你不是贫农？你为什么是地主？如果有贫农愿意要我，我现在就不做你女儿！”父亲扬起的手慢慢地又放了下来。那一时刻，我分明看见父亲的眼角里含着眼泪。

在儿时的记忆中，父亲是很严厉的。他对我的要求非常严格，用他自己的话说就是：“女孩子从小就要受规矩。”他像培养一个大家闺秀般地培养我，我说话、走路、坐卧、吃饭乃至端碗的姿势都必须按他的要求去做。小时候，他经常把我关在家里，让我背《三字经》、《增广贤文》、《弟子规》、《千字文》等古文。而只比我大一岁的哥哥，父亲却放任他在外面自由自在地玩耍。于是，这样一幅画面便在我脑子里永久定格：父亲拿着一把尺子，我像个受戒的小和尚一样恭恭敬敬站在他面前，一字一句地背：“人之初，性本善。性相近，习相远……”背不出来，父亲手里的尺子就高高扬起，而此时哥哥正躲在一旁幸灾乐祸地偷笑。经常是我一边背、一边哭。那时的我心里想的就是：我怎么命这么苦啊？有个地主爸爸，让我受这么多的臭规矩。如果我有个贫农爸爸，保证我再不会背什么“养不教，父之过。教不严，师之惰”了。

我渐渐长大了，地主成分已经对我的生活构不成丝毫影响。长大了的我发现父亲是很疼爱我的，我开始心安理得地享受他给予我的一切。记得上技校时的一个冬天的傍晚，寒流来临，气温骤降。父亲担心我的被褥太薄，骑着自行车走十几里路来给我送厚被褥。途中天降大雨，父亲怕被褥淋湿，脱下雨衣盖在被褥上，自己则冒雨前行。当他来到我的宿舍时，嘴唇都冻乌了，一时连话都说不出来。我当时正沉迷于一本中，只顾躺在床上，连句问候的话也没对父亲说，更不用说去送送他了。

有句俗语说：“年轻时犯的错，上帝都会原谅。”而我对父亲犯的错，如真有上帝，我想他肯定不会原谅我。在父亲活着的有生之年，我从未给他买过任何东西。我送他的唯一礼物：一双羊皮手套还是我在技校参加法律竞赛获得第一名的奖品。当我把手套拿给父亲时，他眼睛都笑眯了，连声夸赞：“还是女儿好，女儿有出息。哪像儿子，一点用都没有。”他戴着那双手套坐单位的值班车，有座位他不坐，偏要站着。他故意抓着上面的栏杆，让车上所有人的目光都盯着他戴着手套的手。当有人夸他的手套漂亮时，父亲立刻得意洋洋地说：“这是我女儿奖的，我那个女儿可有出息了，别人都叫她才女呢。我女儿文文静静的，一点也不像别人家的女儿疯疯颠颠的。”父亲的话引起了很多人的反感，而他仍旧兴奋地自顾自说下去。连母亲都看不下去了，对别人说他太虚荣。唉，一双羊皮手套就能引起父亲那么多的满足。可惜我对此认识得太晚了！

我参加工作后，父亲就一直在山东会战。退休后，他被反聘留在山东继续上班。这其间，我结婚成家，生孩子，一心只围着自己的小家转，父亲被我渐渐地淡忘了。只在逢年过节，我收到父亲托人带给我的礼物：毛呢大衣或羊皮靴时，我才会想起原来他还在山东。年，退休已经5年的父亲终于回到湖北，回来后他就再也没有起来：胃癌晚期。在他住院的那段时间，我每去一次医院，心灵上就要受一次煎熬，我后悔自己对他的关爱太少。坐在父亲的病床前，我问他：“爸爸，我真的不是个好女儿，你怪不怪我？”父亲笑着说：“傻孩子，爸爸怎么会怪你呢？从小到大，你都是爸爸最喜欢的孩子。你哥哥就说爸爸偏心，爸爸是偏心，爸爸就是喜欢你比喜欢他多！”

病中的父亲话特别多，每次我去看他，他都要唠唠叨叨说上半天。他对我说：“你小时候生了一场大病，差点就死了。医生说你没救了，不准备管你了，忙着去斗私批修。你妈妈没办法，跑来找我。我正在上班，一听就急了。我跑到医院，逼着医生抢救你。我说如果你们救不活我女儿，我就跟你们拼命，医生吓坏了。后来又说要给你输血，我二话没说就让医生抽血。那时我刚下夜班，头昏得厉害。”听着父亲的叙述，儿时的往事如**一样在我脑海里放映：上小学时，每逢下雨天，父亲都会到学校接我。怕雨水溅湿了我的裤脚，就一路背着我回家。路上还边走边说：“有谁要小女孩啊？我家卖小女孩。我的女儿又聪明又漂亮，你们买不买呀？”趴在父亲背上的我就连声高叫：“不卖，不卖！要卖就卖哥哥。”父亲接着又说：“你哥那个臭小子，没人要的！”说这话的时候，他根本就没注意到哥哥就走在他身旁。

还记得有一次，大概是我四五岁的时候吧，我在水渠边拔野花，一不小心掉进水渠里。水流湍急，一下子将我冲出好远。父亲当时正在很远的地方，他突然感到胸口一阵疼痛，预感到我要出事，于是就拼命地往前蹬着自行车，一把将我从水里捞上来。我上来时已经昏迷不醒了，他再晚来一步，我恐怕就不在人世了。

在父亲生命的最后日子里，他已经有些神智不清了。有时我去看他，他都感觉不到我的存在。然而在父亲的追悼会上，哥哥含泪对我说了这么一件事：父亲临死前两天，突然回光反照。他把哥哥叫到身旁，语重心长地对他说：“你一直说爸爸偏心，爸爸是偏妹，所以妹才那么任性。妹有得罪你的地方，你不要怪她，要怪就怪我，是我把她给宠坏了！以后你一定要多照顾妹，你是哥哥，妹有事你一定不能不管。”啊，父亲，我深深挚爱的父亲，你让我怎么报答你对我那如海洋般深隧的爱呢？

写到这里，我已是泪流满面。父亲是一本书，我做女儿的就是一位读者，我想我只能用一生的时间细心地去读这本书，才能够品尝出这本书中的酸甜苦辣，才能够感悟到其中所蕴含的人生真谛！

这年七月，我去秦岭山中寻访友人的途中，亲眼目睹了成千上万只蝴蝶，投向溪水集体自尽的那悲壮惨烈的一幕，惊心动魄的一幕：成千上万只蝴蝶如飞蛾扑火般投入秦岭山间一条清澈的溪流，溪流如宣纸般被蝴蝶点染得五彩缤纷，凄美动人。

面对如此惨烈的场面，我惊呆了。茫然不知所措，脑子里一片空白。

这种大场面的蝴蝶，无疑是大自然的一场罕见的大悲剧，它如一幅凄美而弥漫着悲剧色调的油画，给人强烈的震憾力和巨大的冲击波，让人看之不忍又无可奈何，走之不能又束手无策。

秦岭的夏日，密密的山林遮天蔽日，芊芊芳草连着野径，无数山花点缀在山崖密林间，溪水潺潺，山风习习，日照充足，是蝴蝶生息繁衍的理想王国，苍茫的大山，母亲般的养育了100多种蝴蝶。其中的王后当然首推秦岭凤蝶。它墨中滴蓝，翼展在10厘米以上，宛若蝶中凤凰，倾国倾城，风华绝代。这些蝴蝶们曾经美丽过大自然，也倾倒过整座秦岭，更取悦过万物之灵的人类。它们是无数化蝶的绝代佳人，是羽化的翩翩飞天，是绚丽无比的花雨。它们活着，是大自然的一景，亦是人类的幸事，它们常常降落在花朵上，又常常在警觉中过日子，谁曾料到，这些迷人的尤物竟然要在生命最美丽的时刻扑向幻灭？

走近看时，蝴蝶铺满了半条小溪，蓝天之下，溪水之下，仍有大片大片的蝴蝶飘然而下，它们或撞在石头上气绝而亡，或坠入水中挣扎扑腾。成群成片的蝴蝶如飞蛾扑火，若落叶翻飞，似凤凰自焚，朝着溪水撞去，显出大勇者的大从容，如瀑布般飞流直下，其勇也令人惊奇，其死也令人悲叹！

尽管满天的蝴蝶，万众一心，慷慨赴死，前仆后继，但我却不忍心再看下去了，就拼命地朝着成群的蝴蝶大喊大叫，乱吼乱嚷，甚至挥舞着树枝跳跃着四处驱赶，无论我何等焦急，何等卖命，也无能为力，驱也驱不散，赶也赶不开。我想，这些蝴蝶是抱定了一死的决心的，任何外力阻挡于它们也无济于事了。

我看见，一只墨蓝色的大蝴蝶从空中坠落在溪水边的大石上，膀直扑腾，翻滚到石头下，又扑腾着翅膀坠入了溪水之中，像一滴水进入了蝴蝶汇成的彩色的溪水中，随水漂流而去。

百米长的溪流，半是蝴蝶半是溪水。蝴蝶不会哭泣而托溪水声代之，蝴蝶不会悲歌而托松涛声替之。这时，日已黄昏，苍山如海，残阳如血，溪水如花，水声如泣。

看到这个悲壮惨烈的场面很容易使人想起凤凰涅，黛玉葬花，想起二十四史中的烈女，想起八女投江或梁山伯与祝英台的殉情故事。

再听。再看。水声带血。鸟声带血。风声带血。花草带血。山峦带血。荒林带血。一切的一切，都被血色黄昏所笼罩。

这些天使般的精灵，大自然会飞的花朵，秦岭山中的花魂，为什么要将自己美丽的生命毁灭了给人看？是这些美丽的生命不拒绝悲剧才显出了悲壮么，是悲剧毁灭了这些美丽的生命才显出了惨烈么？

秦岭无言，夕阳无言。溪流无言。

山下愈来愈多的烟囱亦无言。

有位诗人说过：“每一个蝴蝶都是从前的一个花魂，回来寻找它自己。”那么，空留下的满山野花是蝴蝶幻化成魂灵么？

倘若有那么一天，连大自然的花魂都没了，那么，蝴蝶又将在何处找，花儿又将在何处寻？

Jack tossed the papers on my desk―his eyebrows knit into a straight line as he glared at 杰克把文件扔到我桌上,皱着眉头,气愤地瞪着我。

It’s not that I hadn’t been warned. Other women who had worked my job before me called Jack names I couldn’t repeat. One coworker took me aside the first day. 　The morning after my teacher came she led me into her room and ge me a doll. The little blind children at the Perkins Institution had sent it and Laura Bridgman had dressed it; but I did not know this until afterward. When t finally succeeded in making the letters correctly I was flushed with childish pleasure and pride.Running downstairs to my mother I held up my hand and made the letters for doll.I did not know that I was spelling a word or even that words existed;I was simply making my fingers go in monkey-like imitation. In the days that followed I learned to spell in this uncomprehending way a great many words, among them pin, hat, cup and a few verbs like sit, stand and walk. But my teacher had been with me several weeks before I understood that everything has a name.

In despair she had dropped the subject for the time, only to renew it at the first opportunity.I became impatient at her repeated attempts and，seizing the new doll，I dashed it upon the floor. I was keenly delighted when I felt the fragments of the broken doll at my feet. Neither sorrow nor regret followed my passionate outburst. I had not loved the doll. In the still，dark world in which I lived there was no strong sentiment or tenderness. I felt my teacher sweep the fragments to one side of the hearth，and I had a sense of satisfaction that the cause of my discomfort was removed. She brought me my hat, and I knew I was going out into the warm sunshine. This thought, if a wordless sensation may be called a thought, made me hop and skip with pleasure.
